What is an affidavit for residential proof?

One of the most commonly used affidavits is a proof of address affidavit. There are many circumstances in which a person needs to provide proof of where he/she lives by means of an affidavit for proof of residence.

Mostly, an affidavit confirming proof of residence is necessary when the person requiring proof of residence is not the owner of the property where he/she resides. The owner can provide proof of residency without needing an affidavit as his/her name is on all the bills (although sometimes he/she may also need an affidavit declaring that he/she lives at the address).

A tenant or co-habitant, on the other hand, needs an affidavit made by the landlord/owner to provide proof of residency. You can download an affidavit template to confirm the residential address of a co-habitant below.

FICA proof of residency

In 2001 South Africa introduced the Financial Intelligence Centre Act 38. According to the act, all providers of financial services (e.g. banks) must verify the identity and address of their customers. The purpose of FICA is to combat financial crimes.

How to write an affidavit of residence

The landlord/owner of the property must write an affidavit for proof of residence on behalf of a tenant or co-habitant. The affidavit must be made in the presence of a Commissioner of Oaths (e.g. at a police station). A copy of the landlord/owners ID document, as well as the ID document of the person requiring proof of residence, must accompany the affidavit.
