Download ALV Form (Application for Licensing of Motor Vehicle)
When to use an ALV form
In South Africa, motor vehicles must be registered, licensed and re-licensed every year. The Electronic National Traffic Information System (eNatis) is the official register for all vehicle, licensing, contravention and accident data.
Before the expiry date of your motor vehicle license, a Motor Vehicle License Renewal Notice (MLV2) will be posted to you. This form must be completed to renew your vehicle license. If you do not have an MLV2 form, you need to complete a green ALV form to apply for renewal of a motor vehicle license.
You can download the ALV form in PDF format below.
How to apply for a motor vehicle license
If you do not have the MLV2 renewal notice form, the ALV form must be completed and supported by the following:
- The identity document of the registered owner
- Proof of postal and residential address
- Identity document of the representative or proxy (if the person applying is not the registered owner)
- Permission letter/letter of proxy (if the vehicle is registered under the name of a business or another person)
- Business certificate (if the vehicle is registered under an organisation’s name)
- Certificate of roadworthiness (if the vehicle is used for public transport or heavy loads)
- Payment
After the expiry date of a motor vehicle license, registered owners have a grace period of 21 days in which to re-license the vehicle.
